Bristol Told To Be Prepared As Flood Alerts Issued Ahead Of Thunderstorm Warnings

Bristol told to 'be prepared' as flood alerts issued ahead of thunderstorm warnings

Warnings of heavy downpours have been issued for the Bristol area ahead of thunderstorms.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms across the South West, including Bristol, from 10am on Thursday, August 11, until 10pm on Friday, August 12.

The Met Office said: "There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds."

The Environment Agency has also issued two flood alerts for the Bristol area, covering the River Frome and River Boyd.

The agency said: "Flooding is possible on low-lying land and roads and riverside footpaths and cycle paths."

Bristol City Council has urged residents to "be prepared" for the thunderstorms.

A council spokesperson said: "We are urging residents to be prepared for the thunderstorms and to take steps to reduce the risk of flooding."

The council has advised residents to:

  • Clear any blocked drains or gutters
  • Move valuable items to higher ground
  • Be prepared to evacuate your home if necessary

The council has also set up a number of rest centers where residents can go if they need to evacuate their homes.

The rest centers are located at:

  • The Bristol Beacon, Triangle West, Bristol, BS1 4PT
  • The City Academy, Whitehouse Street, Bristol, BS3 4HQ
  • The Cotham School, Cotham Road, Bristol, BS6 6DD

The council is also urging residents to stay informed about the latest weather forecasts and to follow the advice of the emergency services.
