Rabid Seals Attack Surfers in Cape Town

Outbreak of Rabies Linked to String of Attacks

Seven People Infected, Vaccinations Underway

Cape Town, South Africa – July 25, 2024 – Health officials in South Africa have confirmed that a rabies outbreak among Cape fur seals has infected at least seven people, prompting a vaccination campaign.

Reports of aggressive behavior in fur seals, particularly towards humans, have skyrocketed since several cases of rabies were identified in the animals. Scientists believe the outbreak may have been triggered by a dog bite.

Over the past three years, scientists in South Africa have been investigating a grim string of fur seal attacks on surfers and beachgoers. The first rabies case in a Cape fur seal was reported in 2020, and since then, 17 cases have been confirmed.

The seal's behavior changed significantly a few years ago, with researchers observing a notable increase in aggressive interactions.

Health officials are urging the public to avoid contact with seals and to report any unusual behavior. Vaccinations are being administered to people exposed to infected seals.
