Strongest Earthquake in Modern History
Three earthquakes, including one of the strongest ever to hit the region, struck off the coast of New Zealand in the last 365 days. The largest of the earthquakes, a magnitude-8.1, struck on March 5, 2021, and was felt throughout the country. The other two earthquakes, both magnitude-7.0, struck in 2020.
Tsunami Warning Lifted
A tsunami warning was issued for parts of New Zealand on Friday afternoon, but it was lifted several hours later. The warning was issued after a magnitude-8.1 earthquake struck off the coast of the Kermadec Islands, about 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) northeast of New Zealand. The earthquake caused a small tsunami that reached New Zealand's coastline, but there were no reports of damage or injuries.
